4/1: FROSH WELCOME MORNING & PLACEMENT TESTS

Students: Math Placement Test (required); World Language Placement Test (optional); VPA Open House (optional); i2 Showcase (optional)

Parents/Guardians: Welcome & Information Session (required)

Our FROSH WELCOME will take place on Saturday, April 1, beginning at 8:00 am in the Sister Teresa Piro, DC, Student Life Center (1055 Ellis Street). This morning will allow us to ensure that our newest students and families have a smooth start to life at SHC. For this first official event for the Class of 2027, please plan to arrive a little early (for parking) and please ensure that your student has a balanced breakfast. Directions and transportation and parking options may be found here.

MATH PLACEMENT TEST

All Class of 2027 students will participate in the Math Placement Test starting at 8:00am on April 1. Most students will be dismissed at 9:30 am. NO REGISTRATION REQUIRED FOR THIS TEST.

NOTE: The Math Placement test includes 30 multiple choice and 10 free response questions; no calculators are needed or allowed. Sixty minutes will be given to complete both parts of the test (for regular test takers). Pencils are provided.

WORLD LANGUAGE SELECTION & PLACEMENT TEST

All incoming students are asked to select the language they would like to study via this form by March 30. On April 1, incoming students with any experience or coursework in French, Japanese, Mandarin, or Spanish are asked to complete a short written and oral assessment to see if placement in a second, third, or fourth year language class would be appropriate. Even students with limited experience in a language should take the placement test, to ensure that their language skills are developing and to create scheduling options later in high school.

VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS (VPA) INFORMATION DESK

VPA classes are optional, seventh classes for ninth graders. These acting, art, chorus, dance, and instrumental music classes meet during block 7 or 8. Because blocks 7 and 8 meet at 8:00 am twice a week and because they are an additional class for most students, they require good time management and discipline. VPA classes develop creativity, community, and problem-solving skills, and prepare students to enroll in advanced VPA courses in future years. There is time built into the sophomore year schedule for all students to enroll in a block 1-6 VPA course (whether or not they took a ninth grade VPA course).

View the list of VPA courses available for ninth graders and learn about submission and audition expectations.

Students and families are invited to join VPA faculty during the Frosh Welcome Morning to learn about our arts courses and VPA-affiliated clubs, and to inquire about how to submit samples of their work. Students who are still unsure about enrolling in a VPA course as a ninth grader will be able to meet the teachers again during fall orientation.

i2 SHOWCASE

All interested students and families are welcome to join i2 students as they present projects at their annual i2 Showcase, which will take place on the DePaul Campus between 11:00 am and 1:30 pm.

PARENT & GUARDIAN WELCOME

During the Math placement test, the Parents Association will provide coffee and breakfast items for parents and guardians. The SHC Administration will also share important information regarding academics, athletics, and student life. This gathering in the Student Life Center Dining Hall is an excellent opportunity for incoming families to speak with current SHC parents, to ask questions about our school, and to find out the many ways you can contribute to events organized by the Parents Association. It is our expectation that at least one parent or guardian attend these informational parent orientation sessions, which will take place between 8:30 – 9:30 am in the Student Life Center.

The Irish Prep Shop will also be open during the Welcome Morning. Irish gear (apparel, water bottles, magnets and other items) will be on sale beginning at 9:30 am. Outfit your Class of 2027 student so they can finish their eighth grade year showing their Irish Pride! We also have plenty of adult-sized items for you and other family members.

If your child has an unavoidable conflict that morning or if you have any questions regarding the Welcomes or the placement tests, please email Assistant Principal for Student Life Christine Buell
