SHC Wins Bruce-Mahoney Football Game

In front of an estimated 8,000 fans at historic Kezar Stadium on Friday October 8th, the Fightin’ Irish football team defeated St. Ignatius 21-20 in the 2021 Bruce-Mahoney Football game. The win evened up the Bruce-Mahoney series 1-1, with boys and girls basketball looming in January. After the Wildcats took a 20-7 lead, the Irish got the ball back with 7:01 to go in the third Quarter. On 4th and 7 from the SI 37, Irish Quarterback Ray-John Spears ’22 hit Bruce Uperesa for a touchdown. The extra point cut the Wildcats lead to 20-14, with 5:31 to go in the third. The Irish took their first lead of the night with 11:00 to go in the game, courtesy of a 42-yard touchdown run from Jerry Mixon ’23 and an extra point from Brian Coyle ’23. Both defenses then held strong on consecutive drives, before the Wildcats got the ball back on their own 28 with 3:17 on the clock. With less than a minute to go, the Wildcats attempted a 42-yard field goal that proved to be just wide to the left and no good. The Irish got the ball back and ran out the clock to secure the victory. Congratulations to Coach Barry McLaughlin and all the Irish players and coaches on a hard fought and spirited win, an instant classic at Kezar Stadium! GO IRISH!
