Margi Beima Named SHC Athletic Director
Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory is pleased to announce the appointment of Margi Beima to the position of athletic director. Beima has served Sacred Heart Cathedral in a variety of roles over the course of nearly two decades including head coach for the SHC Girls Varsity Volleyball team, director of Community Learning Partnerships (CLP), and executive assistant to the president. The appointment follows the retirement announcement of current athletic director Jo Ann Momono. Beima will fulfill the role alongside co-athletic director, Phil Freed.
The depth of Beima’s institutional knowledge, her dedication to the SHC community, and her well-articulated vision for the future of SHC athletics all contributed to her appointment as athletic director. Beima’s vision of further developing a culture of excellence for the athletics department, focusing on positive team cultures, growth of student-athletes, competitiveness of SHC teams and first-class operations align with the school’s strategic plan, allowing her to emerge as the top candidate after an extensive search process.
For nearly two decades, Beima has led the SHC girls varsity volleyball program, amassing more than 500 wins, three WCAL titles, eight CCS crowns, five NorCal titles and a 2014 CIF state title. In 2011, Beima was named CIF State Model Coach of the Year and Western Regional Coach of the Year by the National Federation of State High School Associations. Finally, in 2018, she was named CalHi Sports State Girls Volleyball Coach of the Year. In addition, Beima founded the Serve it Up tournament nearly one decade ago, a gathering of teams from Lasallian schools for a day of community service followed by a tournament. Beima’s accomplishments as a coach are a reflection of her leadership, perseverance and compassionate mentorship. Her determination, dedication and passion for the sport and her team has inspired her players for years—characteristics that will serve her well at the helm of the SHC Athletic Program.
As executive assistant to the president, a role she has filled for 15 years through three leadership transitions, Beima has provided outstanding, trusted and seamless support to executive leadership, the SHC Board of Regents, and to the entire SHC faculty and staff.
Beima’s commitment to the students of SHC is illustrated not only in her dedication as a longtime coach, but in her founding role in the development of the Community Learning Partnerships Program and the Student Launch Initiative (SLI). The CLP Program facilitates opportunities for SHC students to expand their learning beyond the classroom with real world experience. Beima helped to identify and foster partnerships with local tech, finance, medical and biomedical companies, arts organizations, city government and social services organizations, providing rich educational experiences for countless students.
Beima shares, “Sacred Heart Cathedral—and its athletics program—has given me so much as a community member, as a coach and as a parent. I am really excited for the opportunity to now serve as athletic director. My hope is to carry on the rich Irish athletic tradition and help SHC to even greater heights.”
