The Science & Innovation Workshop

Explore exciting topics in energy, food science, and physiology in this three-week workshop! Choose from our morning (9am - noon) or our afternoon (1 - 4 pm) session. Full description of topics are below.

Science & Energy

We will investigate many different ways that science and energy play a role in our everyday lives through hands-on, collaborative activities! Meet new students while getting to experience a week on SHC's campus in a laboratory classroom. We will be tossing water balloons, burning metal solutions, building paper airplanes, pasta towers, and egg drops, and even exercising together to learn how our body uses energy. Looking forward to our fun summer of science!

Food Science

So many exciting chemical reactions can happen with ingredients we find in our kitchen cabinets! We will investigate the dyes in candy, the DNA in strawberries, interactions with milk and food dye, lava lamps with oil and water, and the oxidation of fruits. We will document our findings in a lab journal and even do some research of our own on current topics in food science! Our time together will be filled with dynamic discussions and fascinating kitchen experiments!

Physiology

Students will study the structure and function of the human body and how the body works during physical activity. This week will be conducted in a student-centered proactive learning environment and will have a strong emphasis on current topics in anatomy, fitness, nutrition, exercise physiology and sports performance.
