Speech & Debate

July 6-10 (Session I) | July 13-17 (Session II) | 9 am-3 pm

Students will spend the week mastering the basics of competitive Speech & Debate. Whether their goal is to overcome fear of public speaking, prepare arguments for a social studies debate, or get a glimpse of what competing on the SHC Speech & Debate Team will be like, students will practice public speaking skills that will help them in any academic pursuit. This course is designed to help students learn how to deliver a variety of oral presentations and to master the basics of parliamentary debate, which can be useful in the classroom, at debate tournaments and at the family dinner table. Activities will include public speaking games, mock-trials and tournaments.

Ages: Rising 7th, 8th, & 9th Graders

Instructor: Tristan Ignacio-Bato
Tristan has been involved in high school speech and debate for over 9 years and has coached teams that have placed at numerous national invitationals and qualified to premier national championships. As a competitor, he reached a ranking within the top 25 speakers in the country and has won multiple tournaments and placed highly at many others. In his first year as the Speech & Debate coach, the program has already won a tournament and is continuing to reach high levels of local, state, and national success. Tristan is also the Testing Center coordinator as part of our academic resource program.
