About SHC’s Languages Other Than English Department

The Languages Other Than English Department seeks to engage students in the global community by developing their abilities to articulate ideas and communicate effectively in American Sign Language, French, Japanese, Mandarin or Spanish. Following the National Standards for Foreign Language Education, LOTE curriculum facilitates the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students gain experiential knowledge of other cultures, make connections across disciplines, explore the nature of language and culture by comparisons with their own and actively participate in bilingual communities, beginning with the LOTE classroom.
