Academics

Computer Science courses are taught in a blended learning environment utilizing web-based programs and classroom instructional time to improve understanding of the digital world. Throughout the program, students are taught programming concepts and application of technology in society. Courses focus on skills such as problem-solving, collaboration, and creation of programs. Inspired by the global literary canon, the SHC English Department teaches students to find their own voice and to develop critical literacy so that they become passionate readers, articulate writers, and lifelong contributors to their communities. Click here for more information.

The Inquiry & Innovation Program is a challenging four-year academic and enrichment program based around a core of STEM disciplines designed for students to build the collaboration, problem solving, and leadership skills that will enable them to play important roles in addressing the issues that will face them in the future. The Languages Other Than English Department seeks to engage students in the global community by developing their abilities to articulate ideas and communicate effectively in American Sign Language, French, Japanese, Mandarin or Spanish. Students gain experiential knowledge of other cultures, make connections across disciplines, explore the nature of language and culture by comparisons with their own and actively participate in bilingual communities, beginning with the LOTE classroom. The mission of the SHC Mathematics Department is to help our students appreciate math and its practices and to develop their individual reasoning abilities. We are committed to providing a rigorous, college preparatory curriculum that meets the needs of all students, through innovative learning activities, real world applications and problem solving, and connections across disciplines. Inspired by our founders and in the spirit of the US Bishops’ secondary schools curriculum framework, SHC’s Religious Studies Department helps our students realize and deepen their relationships with God and with others. The mission of the SHC Science Department is to help our students form an appreciation for science and its processes. We teach our students to use the scientific method as an investigative tool so they can more critically understand modern descriptions of our universe and arrive at objective conclusions about the natural world. The students of SHC animate the message of our founders through acts of justice, charity, prayer, community-building and reflection in and out of the classroom. Our service-learning program integrates curriculum-based community outreach and direct service at all grade levels. The Social Studies Department encourages students to refine their literacy and critical thinking skills in pursuit of historical and social inquiry. We prepare future citizens to understand global economics; international relations, social customs, and historical trends; and the impact of the United States within the global community. SHC’s Visual & Performing Arts Department asks students to work individually and collaboratively to create projects and performances that express individual gifts and talents while offering service and joy to others. By critically analyzing artistic mediums from a variety of cultures, time periods, and movements, students acquire a depth and breadth of understanding about themselves and the human experience. The Wellness Curriculum is designed to give students a foundation for healthy living and decision-making for themselves and their community, and it incorporates Physical Activity and Health Education, develops physical, emotional, academic and social health. Click here for more information.

Cocurriculars

We believe that participating in athletics contributes to physical, personal, social and spiritual growth. Each year, more than 700 student-athletes―a little over half the total student body―compete for the Irish on 56 teams in 23 sports. These young men and women add a chapter to the storied history of our athletic program, a tradition of teaching more than just the game which dates back to the 1880s.
