Sonia Danforth Named SHC Girls Head Tennis Coach

Sacred Heart Cathedral is pleased to announce the appointment of Sonia Danforth as the new head coach for the SHC Girls Tennis program. Born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, Sonia competed at the national level in Ireland as a junior player, representing her province before moving to the United States to play Division I collegiate tennis. At University of Tennessee at Martin, Sonia continued to shine, earning Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year honors in 1998. As a 5.0 ranked United States Tennis Association player, Sonia has competed at the national and open tournament levels, captaining many of her USTA teams.

Athletic Director Margi Beima shares, “We are thrilled to have Coach Danforth lead the Fightin’ Irish Girls Tennis Program. With her elite-level technical knowledge of the game and her background in organizational leadership, she will be a wonderful addition to the Sacred Heart Cathedral tennis program.”

Sonia joined the Sacred Heart Cathedral community last spring as an assistant coach in the SHC Boys Tennis program just as the pandemic necessitated the close of the spring season. Sonia earned her BA in Organizational Leadership from Penn State University.
