2014 Archbishop Alemany Awards

This May, the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology honored four individuals who have distinguished themselves by exemplary service to the Church with the Archbishop Alemany Award. This year’s awardees include two SHC leaders, SHC Board of Regents member Sister Christina Maggi, DC, and President John F. Scudder, Jr. ’73. The award acknowledges each recipient’s dedication to providing quality Catholic education in the Bay Area. It is a tremendous honor for SHC leadership, and a testament to SHC’s commitment to provide the finest education in an inclusive Catholic community of faith.

The award honors its namesake, Joseph Sadoc Alemany, OP, the first archbishop of San Francisco. “One of Archbishop Alemany’s first priorities after arriving in California was to see to the education of young people, especially young men for the priesthood,” says Father Michael Sweeney, OP, the president of the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology in Berkeley.

To fulfill this mission, Archbishop Alemany approached the De La Salle Christian Brothers, the Catholic Church’s largest congregation of religious Brothers devoted exclusively to education. Together, Archbishop Alemany and the De La Salle Christian Brothers were instrumental in establishing quality Catholic education in San Francisco. “Each of this year’s honorees continues to fulfill the mission of John Baptist de La Salle and the legacy of Archbishop Alemany,” says Father Sweeney in a recent article.
