Caesar Smith ’98 Named Head Coach for SHC Boys Basketball

Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory is pleased to announce the appointment of Caesar Smith ’98 as the new head coach of the boys basketball program. Smith brings to the position more than a decade of experience in developing, mentoring, and coaching student-athletes to grow on the court and in the classroom. Smith returned to SHC, his alma mater, in 2020 from San Antonio, Texas, where he served as head varsity basketball coach and taught political science at Southwest High School. In his years as head coach at Southwest, Smith transformed the program, helping to achieve its first winning season, most wins in a decade, and the highest number of district wins in school history.

Recognized for his extensive knowledge of the game, strength in player development and prowess in building team culture, Smith was selected by the National Association of Basketball Coaches to coach in the inaugural NCAA College Basketball Academy and by the San Antonio Area Association of Basketball Coaches Board of Directors to coach the 2019 South All-Star Team. As a student at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Smith helped the boys basketball team capture the 1996 WCAL Championship. Smith went on to play at City College of San Francisco and then at Sonoma State University on scholarship. Smith earned his master’s degree in education at the University of Southern California and is currently working on his doctorate in Global Sports Leadership. Smith also serves as an athletic director and physical education teacher for Sacred Heart Cathedral.
