Retreats

Retreats provide time away from school to foster the spiritual well-being of our students. Opportunities for retreats are offered at each grade level and encourage students to reflect upon their relationships with God, themselves, their families, friends, and others.

Through a combination of one-day and overnight retreats, students are empowered to celebrate the gifts they bring to SHC. Retreats strengthen our school community and provide an environment in which students can learn about the presence of God at work in their own lives and the world.

Students of all faith traditions, or none at all, are invited, encouraged, and welcome to participate.

“We know certainly that our God calls us to a holy life. We know that he gives us every grace, every abundant grace; and though we are so weak of ourselves, this grace is able to carry us through every obstacle and difficulty.”

- St. Elizabeth Ann Seton

Frosh  “Live Jesus in Our Hearts!” Retreat

This retreat focuses on the significance of St. John Baptist De La Salle’s encouragement to his community to “live Jesus in our hearts, forever”. This will be discovered through an exploration of the ways the Holy Founders encountered Jesus personally and vocationally in the lives of those around them, especially the young and those experiencing poverty. Participants will be asked to reflect on the founders as a source of inspiration for their own understanding of how they can live Jesus in their hearts and lives. This one-day retreat takes place in September.

Sophomore “Anchored” Retreat

The sophomore one-day retreat is scheduled in January and provides an opportunity to reflect on the anchor, the first symbol used by Christians to describe the power of God. It was chosen because of its function as a way to keep a boat secure even in the midst of wind and storms. We all need anchors in our lives. This retreat will help participants to explore the anchors of community, faith, and service as ways to foster self-identity and understand our call to live with meaning and purpose.

Junior “John 10:10” Retreat

The John 10:10 Retreat is a two-day, off-campus experience centered on  the question: “What does it mean to live an abundant life?” The daily walk with God is challenging given our preoccupation with the “stuff” of our lives. Moreso, we experience times of challenge and suffering that are difficult to overcome. Yet the promise of Jesus is that we can place complete trust and faith in Him and this will give us the strength we need to stand firm in who we are, exercising both courage and hope in order to allow ourselves to encounter the Lord in all that we are, in how we speak, and in our every deed.

Senior “Kairos” Retreat

Kairos is a four-day off-campus retreat attended by seniors and select juniors. Kairos is a Greek word that refers to a moment of opportunity, of challenge or of decision. This time allows students to recognize the presence of God within themselves and their talents, in their parents, families and friendships, in the bible and in the world around them. The retreat is centered on the affirmation of each person’s worth and the idea that God’s love is unconditional and ever-present. Juniors will be nominated by their theology teachers to attend the March Kairos and then be invited to be leaders during their senior year.

District “Called and Chosen” Vocation Retreats

Each year the Lasallian District of San Francisco-New Orleans sponsors the "Called and Chosen" Vocation Retreats for Young Men and Young Women held in the Spring semester. These retreats bring together students from schools throughout the district for a weekend to reflect on the theme of vocation and how God might be inviting participants to consider their future path. This retreat is a unique experience that results in new friends, quiet reflection, and personal spiritual insight in an open, fun, and relaxed environment. Junior and Senior students are nominated by their religion teachers and invited to participate in a “Called and Chosen” Retreat.
