The 2015 U.S. Catholic China Bureau Conference, entitled “The Catholic Church in China: Respecting the Past, Understanding the Present, Envisioning
Future Relationships,” took place from October 9th through the 11th at Mercy Center in Burlingame. Twelve Sacred Heart Cathedral students took part
by assisting with registration, serving food, and directing participants to workshops and events.

Executive Director of the Bureau, Father Robert Carbonneau, expressed his thanks for the exemplary service provided by the students, “Conference participants and the host staff at Mercy Center expressed high praise for the stellar presence of these students. They were polite and engaging.” Father Carbonneau added, “What made this service all the more special was that many of these students had a familiarity with the Chinese language as they were students of Sunny Pan.”

SHC student volunteers included Dewi Beer, Will Bodgan, Xu Cheng, Adrian Clark, Jason Erdenebaatar, Bryn Gillelen, Giana Gillelen, Lauren Ng, Jason Sun, Darren Wan, Anson Zheng, and Kiano Zheng.

SHC Faculty members also added to the success of the conference. Julia Rinaldi, Angie Pfahnl and Sunny Pan worked with Father Carbonneau to gather the students for a pre-conference orientation. Dr. Helen Hollis, Ph.D., was a presenter on the Saturday morning panel that discussed Chinese students in Catholic high schools. Father Carbonneau expressed his appreciation for SHC faculty attendees as well, stating that the presences of Br. Roberto Martinez, F.S.C., Ms. Pfahnl, Ms. Pan and Dr. Hollis “increased the atmosphere of learning that occurred.”

SHC is fortunate to have a number of matriculated students from the People’s Republic of China. SHC student and faculty participation in the conference not only represented the school well, but helped in achieving the stated goal of the conference to “respect the past, understand the present and envision future relationships.”
