Matt Heller

Parent of 9th Grader

Neighborhood: Mission District, San Francisco

When Matt evaluated high schools during his child’s 8th grade year, he said he was impressed by Sacred Heart Cathedral’s ability to provide opportunities for success for every student. “Not only through academics but also through athletics, performing arts, leadership and service, the school makes sure each student is deeply involved in something where they can thrive,” Matt said. “All types of talents and gifts are nourished and celebrated at SHC.”

Matt, who said the Irish for a Day visits made his daughter feel welcomed, stated his favorite aspect of SHC is that the school intentionally ensures all students are involved in cocurricular activities. “The students see and feel how the school values them, and I think they take that to school with them when they go every day.  I think this is what truly creates the feeling at SHC that all are welcome.”

“SHC is unique; the student body truly represents the diversity of San Francisco and its immediate environment. In that the school supports such a wide variety of interests where students have so many pathways that they can explore and create,” Valerie said. “ What I appreciate the most is seeing our students discovering new passions and finding their own individual pathways to develop and explore them at SHC, whether in the arts, athletics or academics.

She noted that SHC showed a deep commitment to educating the entire student in a diverse, inclusive environment steeped in service to others.  “SHC is a school where a child can find a place within all aspects of the school: athletics, academics, arts and club life. Athletes who are proficient in a sport to those who are trying a sport for the first time can find a way to participate.  Students who are academically gifted to those who need more support have a space in our new resource center.  Students are cherished for who they are and fostered for who they will become.”

Rachel Rosenblum

Parent of 10th grader

Neighborhood: Richmond District, San Francisco

Rachel said Sacred Heart Cathedral checked all the boxes for what her daughter was looking for in a school. “She was looking for a diverse student body, vibrant school spirit, service and leadership opportunities, strong athletics and a warm and welcoming community. As parents, we loved that she was receiving an education rooted in values as well as academic offerings that both challenged her and expanded her worldview,” Rachel said.

She appreciated that during her child’s 9th-grade year, the focus is on the students learning to be high schoolers. “During that year, the academics felt engaging but not overwhelming, allowing students to learn self-advocacy, time management and to take ownership of their educational experience,” Rachel said.
