We are thrilled to welcome you to the SHC community! This page serves as a resource to you and your family as you prepare for the 2017-18 school year. Please note that after September 1, 2017, the information provided here will transition to the Class of 2021 Schoology Group.

Frosh Welcome Morning (Students: Math Placement Test and optional LOTE Placement Test; Parents: Orientation)

Our Frosh Welcome Morning will take place on Saturday, April 29, beginning at 8 am in the Sister Teresa Piro, DC, Student Life Center (1055 Ellis Street). This morning will allow us to ensure that you and your child have everything you need to join the SHC community. It is our goal to make your transition to high school smooth and successful. To that end, please plan to arrive a little early. Directions, transportation and parking options can be found here.

All Class of 2021 students will participate in the Math Assessment at the Frosh Welcome Morning. The earliest students will be released is 9:20 am. NOTE: Calculators are not allowed on the placement test, which has 30 multiple choice and 10 free response questions. Sixty minutes will be given to complete both parts. Pencils are provided. If your child has an unavoidable conflict with the Math Placement Test, please email Assistant Principal for Student Life Christine Buell.

If you are testing for a higher level of LOTE, once you are finished with your Math Assessment, please make your way to the first floor to take your LOTE Placement Test. The test should take 30–45 minutes.

Please make sure your child has a balanced breakfast before they arrive on campus. While students complete their assessments, the Parents Association will provide coffee and breakfast items for parents and guardians in the Student Life Center Dining Hall. This is an excellent opportunity for you to speak with current SHC parents, to ask questions, and to find out the many ways you can contribute to events organized by the Parents Association. It will also be an opportunity for SHC administration to share critical information about expectations and policies regarding academics, technology and student life. It is our expectation that at least one parent or guardian attend these informational parent orientation sessions, which will take place between 8:30 and 9:30 am.

Here are other ways that parents can maximize their time on campus during Frosh Welcome Morning:

  • Work out at the SHC Fitness Center which will be open from 8–8:30 am and from 9:30–10:30 am for parents to utilize.
  • Irish Prep Shop: Irish gear (apparel, water bottles, magnets and other items) will be on sale beginning at 9:30 am. Outfit your son or daughter so they can finish their 8th grade year showing their Irish Pride! We also have plenty of adult-sized items for you and other family members.

Language Other Than English Choice Form (Due Tuesday, April 25)

SHC’s Languages Other Than English (LOTE) Department offers five languages for study: American Sign Language (ASL), French, Japanese, Mandarin and Spanish. Students who respond by Tuesday, April 25 at 3 pm will receive the highest consideration for their first-choice language. Indicate your LOTE choice here.

LOTE students who indicated on their online choice form that they are native speakers in their first choice language or who have already completed formal study in their first choice language are required to take the LOTE Placement Test on Saturday, April 29, after their Math Assessment. If your student has an unavoidable conflict with the LOTE Placement Test, please email LOTE Department Chair Gloria Huerta.

Student & Family Information (Due Saturday, April 29)

Complete your student and family demographic/emergency contact information by Saturday, April 29. All incoming families are required to complete this process. You will receive the Student & Family Emergency Contact/Handbook Agreement form in our July mailing where you’ll have an opportunity to confirm all of the information you supplied to SHC.

Jumpstart Registration (Due June 5)

Jumpstart introduces students entering ninth grade to SHC’s active, collaborative and multidimensional learning environment. Each session includes effective study skills, SHC learning resources and educational technology, our Wellness Curriculum, and time in the Fitness Center. All incoming ninth graders are required to attend one session, and must attend the full session.

NOTE: For the educational technology session, students should bring the device they will use during the 2017-18 school year. Please view our minimum systems specifications and Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) FAQs to assist with this.

There is limited enrollment per session, please be sure to register early to ensure your preferred date.

Addtl Jumpstart Info:
On the first day of each session, we’ll meet in the Student Life Center (1055 Ellis Street). Please proceed through the glass doors, go downstairs, and look for the Jumpstart check-in sign.

For the Fitness Center session: please arrive dressed in appropriate attire (t-shirt, shorts, tennis shoes). You may also want to bring a towel, water bottle, a healthy snack, headphones and a music player! Food and drinks other than water are not allowed in the Fitness Center.

For your BYOD session: All rising ninth grade students are required to have the device they will use during the 2017-2018 school year on campus during the BYOD orientation portion of Jumpstart. Please refer to the minimum systems specifications and FAQ documents on the Class of 2021 webpage to assist with your purchasing decision.

Please note: all entering 9th graders are required and should plan on being present for all three days.
