Master the basics of competitive Speech & Debate!
Whether their goal is to overcome fear of public speaking, prepare arguments for a social studies debate, or get a glimpse of what competing on the SHC Speech & Debate Team will be like, students will practice public speaking skills that will help them in any academic pursuit. This course is designed to help students learn how to deliver a variety of oral presentations and to master the basics of parliamentary debate, useful in the classroom, at debate tournaments and at the family dinner table. Activities will include public speaking games, mock-trials and tournaments.

Instructor: Christine Buell
Ms. Christine Buell is the Assistant Principal for Student Life at SHC, overseeing all cocurricular programs including SHC’s Athletics and Visual and Performing Arts programs. She also teaches SHC’s online AP Art History course. She has served as SHC’s Speech & Debate Coach, as well as speech coach of other local elementary and high schools, and has taught in both the English and Social Studies Department.
Instructor: José Vargas
Mr. José Vargas is a frequent contributor to SHC’s Summer Institute, having offered courses in Chess & Gaming, Public Speaking and Film Appreciation. Mr. Vargas majored in Philosophy and Latin American Literature at the University of California, Berkeley. During the school year he teaches English, philosophy and film at Woodside International School. Mr. Vargas is also Senior Seminar instructor to SHC’s De Paul Scholars.
