What if you had to live off of the land in San Francisco? Where would you find shelter, water, and food? Answer these questions by learning how Native Americans and early European settlers interacted with the land. Set out each day to destinations such as Lobos Creek, Heron's Head Park, Candlestick Point, Lands End and Crissy Field to find and explore the pockets of nature that thrive in our present day urban environment. "Peeling back the asphalt" students will come away with a deeper appreciation for the nature that still exists in San Francisco today.
Instructor: Garrett Dempsey
San Francisco native, Eagle Scout, and SHC alumnus, Garrett Dempsey is the Winter Program Manager at Environmental Traveling Companions (ETC). ETC specializes in providing outdoor experiences for people with special needs. Garrett loves exploring the natural world of San Francisco and the areas surrounding our Golden Gate. Moderator of SHCP’s Outdoor Adventure Club, he believes that many life lessons can be found in nature, along with lots of fun and excitement. Garrett is an avid hiker, backpacker and a student of California history. He earned his Wilderness First Responder certification from the National Outdoor Leadership School and has a bachelor’s degree in Societal Perspectives from Humboldt State University.
