San Francisco Neighborhood History
![]()
Dates: July 1-3
9 am - 3 pm
Grades: Students entering 7th - 9th grades in the fall of 2013
Cost: $275 (lunch included)
San Francisco is one of the world’s great cities, but how did it come to be that way? Come explore the connections between the San Francisco of today and the city of the Barbary Coast days. Research the demographic, social and political origins of specific neighborhoods and trace their histories right up to the 21st century. Students will physically explore some of San Francisco’s most historic neighborhoods, cameras and smartphones at the ready, to capture aspects of the city we love. The course will culminate with a multimedia group project requiring students to create and publish digital presentations of their favorite neighborhoods. Students must bring their own digital camera/device to take photos during the week.
Instructor: Jim Jordan
Jim Jordan is the English department chair and has taught all four grade levels during his 13-year tenure at SHC, including advanced placement and honors courses. He also serves as a national essay reader for the AP English language and composition exam. His current classroom passion involves the incorporation of digital media into daily English and writing curriculum. A native of San Francisco, he has inside knowledge of the city’s cultural, social and political history from multiple sources, one of which is his father, former San Francisco Police Chief and Mayor Frank M. Jordan. Prior to his teaching career, he worked on three mayoral campaigns and spent several years in local broadcast journalism at KNBR radio and KTVU TV.
