Musical Theatre

Grades: Students entering 7th, 8th, and 9th grades in the fall of 2014
Cost: $300 by the "Early Bird" deadline (April 17, 2014); $350 after April 17, 2014

This workshop will allow students to enjoy an introduction to Musical Theatre through hands-on improvisation and acting techniques, rudimentary study of the mechanics of a song, and the exploration of Dance techniques.  Participants will learn individually and as members of a group.  The workshop will culminate with an open class where parents and family can come to enjoy some of the successes of the week.

Instructor: Francine Torres-Kelly
Francine Torres-Kelly is Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory’s Director of Drama. She’s taught, directed and performed professionally throughout the United States and overseas. Ms. Torres-Kelly holds a Bachelor’s Degree from San Francisco State University, a Master of Fine Arts from UC San Diego La Jolla Playhouse Professional Actor Training Program, and a past member of the acting company at American Repertory Theatre at Harvard. She founded Theatre Sports La Jolla and has extensive experience in the art of Improvisation. She has taught extensively at the American Conservatory Theatre (ACT) and The Jolla Playhouse. Ms. Torres-Kelly was a member of Luis Valdez’ El Teatro Campesino for many years, and has performed at A.C.T, Dallas Theatre Center and the La Jolla Playhouse.  Presently, she is involved in San Francisco's comedy sketch group, Killing My Lobster, and teaches in the Studio Series at American Conservatory Theatre. 

Ms. Torres-Kelly is an award-winning actress who has performed in over 200 productions, including: origination of the role of Ana in Real Women Have Curves (prior to the film), for ART – Smeraldina inThe King Stag, Toinette in The Imaginary Invalid, Dorine in Tartuffe, Katrin Dowling in The Naked Eye, The Mother in Six Characters in Search of an Author

Sacred Heart Cathedral Productions under the direction of Ms. Torres-Kelly include The Imaginary Invalid,Hello Dolly!, The Servant of Two Masters, Grease!, Cinderella, The Crucible, The King and I, The King Stag, West Side Story, Dracula, CHICAGO, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Guys and Dolls, and Romeo and Juliet, Little Shop of Horrors, Scapino!, Bye Bye Birdie, To Kill a Mockingbird, Into the Woods, The Miser, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.  Ms. Torres-Kelly brings with her a cheeky sense of humor and sincere love of teaching.
