The San Francisco Prep Hall of Fame has announced the induction of Sacred Heart graduate, Jerry Mahoney ’44, into the San Francisco Prep Hall of Fame this spring. The 34th Annual San Francisco Prep Hall of Fame Awards Banquet will take place on May 21, 2016, at the Spanish Cultural Center in San Francisco.

Jerry played two years of varsity football and was a First Team All-AAA football player in 1943. Jerry was also a star on the court as a four-year varsity basketball player, and he was named Third Team All-AAA as a junior and First Team as a senior.

Following his time at Sacred Heart, Jerry was crowned the heavyweight boxing champion at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station prior to his deployment in World War II. The fiery redhead is known as one of the greatest all-around athletes in San Francisco prep history.

The Bruce-Mahoney rivalry, known as the oldest private school athletic rivalry in the nation, is named in honor of both Bill Bruce (Saint Ignatius College Preparatory, 1935) and Jerry Mahoney. The two men share stellar athletic backgrounds and both ultimately lost their lives serving their country in World War II. Jerry served as a Naval officer after graduation and was aboard the SS Henry B. Plant when the ship was sunk by a German submarine in the English Channel on February 5, 1945.

Each year, football, and boys basketball and baseball teams from SHC and St. Ignatius College Preparatory compete for the Bruce-Mahoney trophy. The school that wins two out of three games proudly takes the trophy for the year.
