Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory proudly welcomed actor, producer and activist Danny Glover as its keynote speaker at today’s Social Justice Assembly. Glover was joined by his son and SHC alumnus, Ramon ’12.
The assembly, which focused on climate change and environmental stewardship, included heartfelt student reflections, student-produced videos and beautiful vocal performances by the SHC Chamber Ensemble. Students opened the assembly by quoting from Pope Francis’ encyclical on the environment: “I urgently appeal for a new dialogue about how we are shaping the future of our planet. We need a conversation which includes everyone, since the environmental challenge we are undergoing and its human roots, concern and effect us all. We need to experience a conversion or a change of heart.”
Glover spoke about climate change in light of his new film, This Changes Everything, a documentary based on the acclaimed book by Naomi Klein. He urged students to embrace their roles as the next generation of environmental ambassadors charged with ensuring the planet’s health. He shared, “The process of alienation has happened for a long period of time—alienating ourselves from the land, situating us in cities, losing a sense of ourselves and our relationship with nature. The question is: are we capable of reversing that process? That’s a major question, and that’s on your watch.”
