Fitness Center and Weight Room
SHC students have access to state-of-the art fitness and weight training facilities thanks to the 2006 construction of our Fitness Center and athletics weight room. A study released by the American College of Sports Medicine showed that students who participate in vigorous physical activity such as sports perform better in school, so SHC strives to provide facilities and programs that encourage our students to get active to relieve stress and promote their overall wellness.
FITNESS CENTER
Featuring more than 50 machines and benches including treadmills, DanceDanceRevolution, elliptical machines, stationary bikes, Wii Fit, stair-climbers, rowers, weight benches, free weights, and a whole range of other fitness and exercise equipment, many of which are equipped with personal cable TVs, the Fitness Center has everything our community members need to pursue their fitness goals, including the guidance of Fitness for Life Director Angie Pfahnl. The spacious Fitness Center sprawls over 4,500 square feet, including the Timothy Baptista ’99 Strength Training Area, and an 800-square-foot dance studio complete with hardwood floors, mirrored walls and barres.
Fitness for Life
The Fitness Center is the centerpiece of SHC’s Fitness for Life program, which offers a variety of academic and after-school classes to engage and challenge students of all fitness levels. The goal is to expose students to as many activities as possible so they can find ones they enjoy, thus creating active and healthy habits and lifestyles.
After-School Use
The Fitness Center truly comes alive once students leave the classroom. Free after-school classes include yoga, martial arts and various others at different times. Our dance team uses the studio for practice, the Fitness Club meets twice per week, and students use the space as their own personal gyms, setting their own workout regimens or working with the assistance of our staff. Students earn modified dress passes through our 30-Hour Fitness Challenge, in which they are challenged to spend 30 hours working out in the Fitness Center in a semester.
Outdoor Adventures
Our Fitness for Life program doesn’t stop once students leave the Fitness Center. The Outdoor Adventures Club takes the program on the road…or trail, river, slope and more. The club offers various trips and opportunities to take in some of the spectacular beauty that surrounds us in the Bay Area and Northern California. Ski trips, group hikes, camping and whitewater rafting are some of the highlights offered each year at SHC.
WEIGHT ROOM
While the fitness center is for our students and community in general, the weight room is specifically for use by our interscholastic student-athletes. With 2,740 square feet of open space, and a brand-new floor being installed thanks to funds raised in the 2012 Walkathon, the weight room provides our Fightin' Irish student-athletes with a leg up on the competition both in terms of facilities and support under the watchful eye of Strength and Conditioning Coach Colin Peuse.
