Echoes of Harlem
Friday, May 10, 2013
During the twentieth century, African influences permanently altered American music of every genre, so much so that one music writer dubbed the century the "Afro-American Epoch." It was jazz, first coming out of New Orleans, then out of flourishing African-American communities in Chicago and Harlem, that ignited the chain reaction of rhythmic transformation that spread to every genre of American music.
In this concert, the SHC musicians go back to the beginning of the epoch to explore the works of two Harlem Renaissance composers, Duke Ellington and William Grant Still. Featured numbers will include Ellington’s “Cotton Club Stomp” and Still’s “Whippoorwill’s Shoes” and “Moon Dusk.”Please click here for more information and to purchase tickets.Read more -
